How does the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method work?
Unleashing full potential with the 100/100 approach
The LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method is a thinking & problem-solving technique developed to unleash full potential in the individual and in the group. It is used for any sort of complex issue with no easy or obvious solution. It is used across various types of organizations and age groups whenever there is a wicked problem and the full brain power needs to be applied.
LEGO SERIOUS PLAY is a very simple process where everyone is actively contributing. It starts with a facilitator asking a serious business question. All teams members are then building individual answers with the LEGO bricks and sharing their stories, insights and new ideas that are coming up with the whole team. Everyone has the opportunity to ask questions, to get a better understanding and to have joint team reflections. We call that a 100/100 approach. It means that everyone is really 100% working on the solution, and 100% present and contributing - which happens rarely in the normal business world.
Play is like a fertilizer for the brain - by using play we use our full brain power. In companies or in organizations this allows ourselves to explore, to experiment and to use the full plasticity of the brain so we get different kinds of ideas. It enables us to work together in a different way, so we can construct - for example - shared models. There are parts of the play, where we exploit and experiment, for example with competitive landscapes. We can play out events that could happen or differnt types of decisions we want to make. We can get a sense of how a competitor or a client would respond to this. This way we co-construct the knowledge through play.
The core concept behind? ‘Hand knowledge’ – the fact that through activating your hands new insights and understanding are unlocked. 70% of our hand nerves are directly connected to our brain. In LEGO SERIOUS PLAY workshop settings we take maximum advantage of this neurobiological superpower.

Foundations of the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method
Core beliefs about leadership and organizations
LEGO SERIOUS PLAY is based on a set of fundamental beliefs about leadership and organizations:
Everyone contributes: Leaders don't have all the answers, and success depends on hearing every voice in the room.
People are invested: People naturally want to contribute, feel part of something bigger, and take ownership.
Knowledge is shared: Unfortunately, teams often underperform because valuable team member knowledge stays untapped.
Adaptability is key: Encouraging everyone to contribute with their ideas, leads to more sustainable businesses.
Origins of the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method
New ways to create powerful strategies
End of the1990s Kjeld Kirk Kristiansen, owner of the LEGO Group, sparked the idea of using bricks in their own board rooms for creative solution finding. He joined forces with two professors at IMD Business School in Lausanne, Switzerland. Their goal? To find new ways for companies to plan strategies.
They saw the value of employee input and the need for adaptable plans. This led them to a unique approach: using LEGO bricks to build 3D models representing business challenges. This innovative method became known as LEGO SERIOUS PLAY, which is nowadays applied in many different business areas from team coaching over innovation processes to future-scenario planning.
Per Kristiansen, Trivium Managing Partner, was part of the project development team inside the LEGO group at that time and is one of the co-creators of the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method.
